BOARDROOM BLITZ BFL Leadership Implodes Amid Power Struggles and Divided Loyalties

In a stunning turn of events, the Botswana Football League (BFL) has been plunged into a leadership crisis, with both Chairperson Peter Emolemo Kesitilwe and Chief Executive Officer Bennett Mamelodi resigning within 48 hours of each other. The twin exits have left the league rudderless at a time when it faces mounting pressure over governance, finances, and fractured club relations.

The resignations follow a tense Annual General Assembly (AGA) in Palapye, where five clubs, Gaborone United, Extension Gunners, Township Rollers, Matebele FC, and Mochudi Centre Chiefs, reportedly pushed for Mamelodi’s suspension. The clubs cited poor governance, financial mismanagement, and dissatisfaction with the Betway Botswana sponsorship deal, which they dismissed as “peanuts.”

Sources close to the matter allege that Gaborone United orchestrated a “boardroom coup,” rallying support to oust Mamelodi. In a move reminiscent of the 2016-17 season where some premier league club leaders allegedly connived to have their way with him, the CEO was this time accused of exceeding the league’s P18 million budget and mishandling prize money payments, including a controversial P100,000 deposit into a joint account against Rollers’ instructions, a matter already dismissed by former Rollers investor Sebata as a non-issue.

Also at the heart of the unrest is a reported P700,000 budget deficit and a sponsorship deal with Betway Botswana allegedly worth only P1.5 million. Clubs argue the deal undervalues the league, with each team receiving less than P100,000 per season to wear the Betway logo. Mamelodi’s critics say the sponsorship lacks transparency and strategic foresight, despite some club chairpersons differing with this assertion and saying Mamelodi was in consultation with the board all the time.

Mamelodi, often hailed for his bold leadership, resigned after losing the confidence of key stakeholders. Yet, not all clubs supported the motion to suspend him. Morupule Wanderers Chairman Agisanyang Dingalo called the move “oppressive,” while another chairman warned against scapegoating Mamelodi alone.

“The board must be accountable. The Betway deal should be revisited, and so should the deficit, but fingers cannot just point at one man,” he said as reported by The Midweek Sun.

Kesitilwe, a respected chartered accountant, stepped down citing a need to protect his professional reputation. His resignation came just days after publicly denying Mamelodi’s suspension, raising questions about internal contradictions and pressure from within the board.

With both top seats vacant, interim board chairperson Sipho Showa has stepped in, pledging to keep the league on track for its August 15 kickoff.  However, uncertainty looms over who will take over as CEO. Unconfirmed reports suggest an official from Extension Gunners may be the preferred candidate, another move allegedly engineered by the same bloc of five clubs as reported by The Midweek Sun.

Club leaders are now calling for a fundamental rethink of the BFL’s financial model. One chairman proposed a shift from sponsorship dependency to asset-based revenue generation, according to Mmegi.

“We should have products and commodities to sell, even if it means buying land, developing it, and generating income from it.”

Others point to long-standing personal vendettas and shifting allegiances, with some shareholders accused of turning on former allies in a bid to consolidate power.

The BFL’s future hangs in the balance. While the league has circulated draft fixtures, clubs are demanding clarity on leadership, finances, and governance. The Betway deal remains under review, and calls for a forensic audit of the league’s operations are growing louder.

As Botswana football prepares for its next season, the question remains: can the BFL rise from the ashes of its boardroom battles, or will the beautiful game be overshadowed by politics and power plays?
