NOBLE GESTURE Limkokwing awards over P17.2million in scholarships to 100 individuals

In his noble mission to transform the next generation of Batswana into confident, skilled and techno-savvy individuals who can contribute towards building their country’s economy by expanding it into new industries, the Founder President of Limkokwing University Worldwide, Tan Sri Dr. Limkokwing has splashed out over P17 million worth of scholarships to 100 individuals to study at the local institution beginning this academic year.

The scholarships which cover 100% full tuition only, were distributed across various strategic sectors within the economy including; creative industries, special needs and vulnerable youths, entertainment industry, various embassies and high commissions, Limkokwing alumni and staff as well as the media fraternity. Eligible beneficiaries of these scholarship are to be selected by respective sectors and submitted to Limkokwing for further processing with the exception of Limkokwing Staff, Alumni and the Entertainment Industry beneficiaries who will be administered through various criteria through the University Scholarship Board.

Present to witness the award of these scholarship at a launch ceremony of Friday at a prestigious event held at the Block 7 campus Hall of Fame was the Minister for Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development Honorable Tumiso Rakgare, who hailed the initiative of availing 100 scholarships to various sectors of the economy as a commendable gesture by the University and its leadership.

He said, “There is no better way to empower an individual than to give them knowledge and skills.  We are pleased as Government that Limkokwing University of Creative Technology is contributing towards attainment of a knowledge-based economy. It is our strong view as a Ministry that local creatives are exceptionally talented, and that if well-coordinated the sector can contribute significantly to the economy.  It can create jobs for our people, particularly the youth.”

Also at the launch was the Director – Coordinating Office for People with Disabilities Mr. Thomas Motingwa, who received 20 Scholarships on behalf of the Ministry of Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration for people with disabilities and orphaned and vulnerable children.

He commended the University for what he termed a noble gesture, adding that “as a Government we are indebted, as this gesture continues to widen access to tertiary education in general, to special needs of students living with disabilities in particular. The University has demonstrated commitment towards economic endeavours that uplift communities, engages the youth, and drive the use of new technologies by answering the call to the new markets.”Scholarships were also offered to former students and staff of Limkokwing University 

The launch event was also graced by representatives of Embassies and High Commissions of Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and Zimbabwe, BOMU and BEPA management as well as the National Director of MISA Botswana Mr. Tefo Phatshwane who received 16 scholarships on behalf of the Botswana Private Media fraternity.

In awarding these scholarships, Tan Sri Dr Limkokwing derives motivation from his belief that the industries in question are increasingly being managed by young people with the digital skills to operate a global business. He believes that education is the very component that holds the key to empowering every young Motswana into becoming innovative leaders.

Thus he offered these scholarships amid the Covid-19 challenges as part of the university’s corporate social responsibility to assist the nation in training more young people so that they can be equipped with skills to sustain themselves beyond the pandemic.

Limkokwing University strives to produce graduates who can contribute meaningfully to society and industry. The University produces global graduates who are industry ready, look beyond employability upon graduation and future leaders who will take part in decisions making that will contribute towards national developments in their countries.

The University also brought fresh new perspectives that combine Asian and Western values with a solid mission aimed at shaping nations by empowering the youth with skills needed to keep pace with the giant strides of the rest of the world. The scholarships worth P 17 267 340.00  were offered under the Limkokwing Foundation of Excellence in Education.
