In a bold statement of commitment, Orange Botswana has pledged to assist in the eradication of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) across the country.

This announcement was made during the commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism Against GBV, which concluded with a panel discussion and various activities aimed at raising awareness and inspiring action.

The commemoration event was hosted by Orange Botswana and the German Agency For International Cooperation (GIZ) at the Avani Hotel in Gaborone, with the panel discussion theme being “Private Sector Action in Preventing GBV Together.”

Gender-based violence (GBV) is a significant issue in Botswana, with some alarming statistics. According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), over 67% of women in Botswana have experienced abuse, which is more than double the global average. The World Population Review also cites Botswana as having the highest incidence of rape in the world, at 92.93 per 100,000 people.

Globally, the situation is also concerning. The UN Women Data Hub reports that almost one in three women (about 736 million) have experienced physical or sexual violence at least once in their lifetime. This includes intimate partner violence and non-partner sexual violence. Comparatively, Botswana’s rates are significantly higher than the global average.

Addressing this alarming statistic, Orange Botswana’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Gobe Mbayi, emphasized the devastating impact of GBV on individuals and communities. “GBV destroys lives, erodes communities, and stifles progress. At Orange Botswana, we refuse to accept this as our reality. We believe in the power of action, collaboration, and relentless determination to create a Botswana where safety, respect, and equality are fundamental rights—not privileges,” Mbayi stated.

Mbayi also called on the private sector to leverage its resources and influence to challenge harmful norms and foster inclusive, safer communities. This year’s theme, ‘Strengthening the Role of the Private Sector in Combating GBV’, highlights the crucial role businesses can play in breaking the cycle of violence and replacing it with a cycle of support, empowerment, and prevention.

Botswana Police Service’s Senior Assistant Commissioner, Goitsione Ngono, echoed this sentiment, stating, “This is not just about corporate responsibility; it is about human responsibility.” The 16 Days of Activism Against GBV is held annually to raise awareness and inspire action towards the eradication of GBV.

BGBVC Programmes Manager, Ms. Amantle Molemoeng, highlighted the high prevalence of GBV and the various forms it takes during her participation in the panel.

The event also included donations through the GBV Orange Money Wallet, directly supporting BGBVC. Orange Botswana’s Digital & PR Coordinator, Ludo Chalashika, shared, “It is the Orange Foundation’s hope to foster relationships and partnerships that will amplify awareness and encourage a solution-driven mindset.”

Orange Botswana reaffirmed its commitment to standing against Gender-Based Violence and creating safe spaces in communities through action and accountability. “Orange is here to partner with you, Botswana, to bring an end to Gender-Based Violence. One trusted solution at a time,” the company stated.
