In a dramatic turn of events, Botswana’s Leader of Opposition and Botswana Congress Party President Dumelang Saleshando yesterday had his Toyota Fortuner stuck in a stream of muddy water on his way from Xaxaba settlement in the Okavango Delta.

It took the efforts of staff from a local safari lodge to get them out of the sticky situation and the couple has expressed gratitude after the lodge also accommodated them for the night, away from their home in Maun where they were headed when the mishap happened.

The duo had gone to the settlements to donate some hampers as captured by Dineo Saleshando in her social media post earlier today. Dineo is Dumelang’s wife and over the past weeks they have travelled together on this drive to donate hampers in the area.

This is what Dineo wrote:

“An eventful, exhilarating, yet fulfilling day we had in Xaxaba. LordDums and I undertook a trip to this settlement in the beautiful Okavango Delta yesterday.

In conjunction with the area Councillor, we were able to donate sanitary pads and food hampers to the Xaxaba community.

On our way back, our car got stuck crossing a stream.

Got stuck in the middle of animal infested bush for 5 hours.

Only got rescued around 8 at night.

LordDums and I remain grateful for this experience as it brought home risks these communities in these areas are exposed to each time they step out of their homes.

We remain thankful to @Belmond Eagle Safari

Lodge for the rescue and providing a safe home for us for the night.

We are back in Maun, tired, exhausted, but safe…”
