Sputnik has been officially admitted to the African Union of Broadcasting (AUB), the largest journalistic platform in Africa.

The inauguration of the new AUB members took place at the Union’s Congress, which is being held this year in Gaborone.

The Union’s assembly was opened by Botswana’s Vice President, SlumberTsogwane who pledged support for initiatives geared towards enriching content created for African communities.

“The Government of Botswana appreciates and supports the training of media personnel, Content exchange, and the facilitation of rights negotiations through AUB. Such initiatives empower our local media and enrich the content that is made available to our communities. This collaboration through content exchange represents a significant advancement and an opportunity for African broadcasters to share authentic stories which foster a greater understanding of our cultures. Our resolve to develop and strengthen our media landscape remains critical, as it is our story as Africans that we must tell with pride, stories like Botswana athlete Letsile Tebogo’s incredible gold medal victory in the 200 meters at the recent Olympic games in Paris, a triumph not only for Botswana but for all of Africa,” Tsogwane said.

Members of the Sputnik team led by Victoria Buganova, the Africa department head, as well as Correspondent, Viktor Anokhin were among  the hordes of media representatives from across Africa to grace the general assembly that was held at Avani Hotel gardens.

Buganova, who was on her first visit to Botswana said they were happy to be now recognized officially as a part of the African media family, where they are free to showcase their diverse content as compared to the situation with the West where Russian media is banned.

Sputnik’s presence in Botswana, she said, will allow them to forge more friendships with local media with possibility of fruitful cooperation with news agencies in the country.  Already, they have been able to meet with some media representatives from Botswana media, some of whom are already using their content, just as is the case with other African countries.

Apart from being a news agency, Sputnik also operates radio, and produces radio podcasts anchored by various media personnel across several countries.

The 15th Annual General Assembly of the African Union of Broadcasting (AUB) converged players in African broadcast media to discuss the future of the industry, particularly in the face of challenges posed by new technologies and climate change around the theme: “The Future of African Media in the Face of the Challenges of New Technologies and Climate Change.”

The African Union of Broadcasting comprises Africa’s largest media and broadcasting companies from more than 50 countries.
