When the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology Botswana yesterday officially launched and lit the country’s tallest Christmas tree set up at Game City Mall in Gaborone, they  simultaneously made donations worth P40 000 to some selected charity organisations, and also gave out several scholarships.

The generous donations made on the day targetted children from the Gamodubu Child Care Trust, SOS  Children’s Village Childline Botswana and the Kopano Rehabilitation Foundation, who received Christmas hampers and monetary donations from the university.

Over the years, the university has used the occasion of lighting up the Christmas tree to reach out to the underprivileged who are also given a chance to celebrate Christmas like any other person with the means to please themselves.

The institution’s Vice President for Regional Management, Cipack Maphosa hailed the event as the most of the most anticipated at the end of every year in the university calendar, adding that they embark on such benevolence as part of their pledge to always give back to the community.

“As Limkokwing University, compassion is part of our DNA and this attests to the fact,” Maphosa said, encouraging people to also show compassion in whatever way they can. The hampers given were essential learning materials that include stationery and school bags, to encourage students to pursue their education whole heartedly.

Each of the four selected charity organisations was awarded P10 000. The university also presented 100 scholarships to different ministries under Frontline and Healthcare Scholarships as well as Limkokwing Scholarships to three ministries in honour of the late Founder and President of Limkokwing University, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Paduka Emeritus Professor Dr Lim Kok Wing, who passed on early this year.

Twenty (20) scholarships were donated to the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development to be allocated to eligible orphans and vulnerable children. The other 40 were given to the Ministry of Presidential Affairs, Governance and Publication Administration, while another batch of 40 scholarships went to the Ministry of Health and Wellness to be received by frontliners and healthcare workers who have been working hard and tirelessly during the Covid pandemic. Vice Chancellor at Limkokwing University of Creative Technology, Dr Raphael Dingalo emphasised that the Christmas tree was about peace, forgiveness, divine love and happiness.
