Letshego Botswana, a prominent institution in inclusive finance, has successfully concluded its Kitso Konokono Financial Literacy and Poetry Competition. The initiative, which merged poetry with financial education, aimed to enhance financial literacy among Batswana by tapping into the power of creative storytelling.

Over 150 aspiring poets answered the call when the competition was launched, submitting their original poems on financial topics. After careful evaluation, 20 exceptional entries were selected based on criteria such as originality, thematic relevance, clarity of message, creative use of metaphors, and educational value. For six weeks, the public actively engaged with the entries, voting for their favourites across social media platforms in the first stage of the competition.

Kgotso Bannalotlhe, Letshego Botswana’s Chief Executive Officer and Regional Executive for BOLESWA, commended the competition’s impact: “This campaign reflects our mission to Improve Lives. Promoting financial literacy empowers individuals to make informed financial decisions and access essential services, contributing to a more inclusive economy.”

The contest, which began in June, invited citizens aged 18 and above to submit poems in Setswana or English, focusing on personal finance themes. Weekly winners earned P1,000 each, while the grand prize of P50,000 was awarded to the poet with the highest number of public votes during the final stage.

After an intense contest among the top eight finalists, Edwin Moroka, known by his stage name Serurubele, emerged victorious. His poem resonated deeply with voters, earning him the prestigious grand prize.

Reflecting on his achievement, Moroka said: “This victory is incredibly special. It’s an honour to use poetry as a tool to promote financial literacy. I hope my words inspire others to take control of their financial journeys.”

The Kitso Konokono competition stood out for its ability to transform complex financial topics into accessible content, fostering greater financial awareness among the public. The bilingual submissions ensured inclusivity and cultural relevance, further emphasizing the importance of financial education in building a resilient society.

Kealeboga Sebolai, Head of Marketing at Letshego Botswana, expressed satisfaction with the campaign’s success: “The response to the Kitso Konokono competition has been fantastic. It was more than just a contest—it became an effective platform for financial education. We hope this initiative inspires more Batswana to pursue financial independence.”
