PRESIDENT'S CALL Masisi seeks to enhance citizen beneficiation in domestic mining industry

Botswana President Dr. Mokgweetsi Masisi this week told a group of senior management from the Khoemacau copper mine that his government was  committed to enhancing value creation and citizen beneficiation in the domestic mining industry.

President Masisi, who was welcoming the group this past Wednesday morning added that he also recognized the potential for revenue diversification and job creation by going beyond exporting minerals in their raw form.

He stressed the importance of fostering effective partnerships with the private sector to benefit more from the country’s abundant mineral resources, highlighting Botswana’s strong record in resource management.

President Masisi expressed delight at the acquisition of the Khoemacau mine by MMG Group, particularly as major shareholders are from China Minmetals Corporation (CMC). He noted the potential for a brighter future for Botswana’s copper industry.

Chairperson, Mr. Xu Jiqing, expressed dedication to doubling Khoemacau’s production and transforming it into one of the most significant high-grade copper operations in Africa. He emphasized leveraging existing infrastructure and proven mining methods to increase production capacity. To achieve this, he said the mine would conduct a feasibility study to identify exploration opportunities in northwest Botswana.

The Khoemacau mine acquired assets in the Kalahari Copper Belt after the liquidation of Discovery Metals in 2015. The mine currently employs over 1,500 people, with 95% being Batswana.
