The Botswana Democratic Party has today confirmed the arrival of Shoshong Member of Parliament  Aubrey Lesaso into their fold. Lesaso has been an opposition MP under the Umbrella for Democratic Change and he becomes the second UDC MP in just a month, to join the ruling party.

Speculation over Lesaso’s defection from the opposition coalition took effect last year when many said he was going to join former President Ian Khama at the Botswana Patriotic Front, information he would publicly deny, saying he had no intentions to join the BDP.

This past week, all talk in the local political sphere has been about his imminent defection, with some in the opposition ranks saying they would only believe he is going once they see his resignation letter.

Today the letter was delivered and he immediately applied for membership at the ruling party, which welcomed him officially this afternoon.

“The Mighty BDP is delighted to welcome Member of Parliament for Shoshong Hon Aubrey Lesaso  into its fold. The party continues with its massive recruitment drive to attract members of opposition into the party,” read the BDP statement this afternoon, which was accompanied by Lesaso’s application letter and his new membership card.

Earlier today, Dithapelo Keorapetse of the UDC confirmed receipt of Lesaso’s resignation letter. Wrote Keorapetse:

“He has just confirmed his resignation from the UDC and left both UDC caucus whatsaap group and Joint Opposition group. I didn’t anticipate that today he’d leave the UDC.”
Lesaso also left the same message in the different opposition social media platforms he was a part of, writing:
“Please kindly accept my resignation from the UDC my fellow Cdes. I sincerely wish you a successful journey in this 12 parliament. I enjoyed and shared successful moments with you. I will always cherish those moments with my friends. I will always love you.”
Lesaso became the first ever opposition MP for Shoshong when he defeated Dikgang Makgalemele of the the BDP in the 2019 general elections.
Lesaso follows in the footsteps of Pono Moatlhodi, the Tonota MP who joined the ruling party last month.
