OUTFOXED Ex-minister cornered by corruption charges and social media firestorm

Former Minister of Minerals and Energy, Maxwell Lefoko Moagi, also known as Fox to those who know him better, walked into the Gaborone Regional Magistrate Court this Tuesday with the weight of millions hanging over his head, and the eyes of a restless public glued to every move, including an innocent handcrafted bracelet many speculated was a charm he got from his Sangoma!

The charge sheet reads like a corruption thriller: P4.7 million allegedly slipped through Wisecreatives Investments, prospecting licences in Gantsi, Tsabong and Tutume, and a minister’s bank card to access the loot. Add to that a second matter of 100 heifers and a bull worth P417,500 allegedly “gifted” by Sieyuan Electric Botswana, a company with contracts under his ministry. Prosecutors say Moagi later tried to wash the deal clean with a fake loan agreement.

The State asked the court to reserve his plea, hinting that “more than one accused person” could eventually join him in the dock. Bail was set at P5,000, with strict conditions: two sureties, no missed appearances, and permission required for travel.

But outside the courtroom, the noise is louder. Social media has been buzzing with several more theories, with some taking their audiences back to August last year when there were claims about a Jojo tank stuffed with cash and many other ex-BDP ministers living large. Moagi has since denied the tank story, asking rhetorically at the time: “Where would I even get that kind of money?”

The case now sits at the intersection of law and public perception. For many Batswana, it is not just about Moagi,  it is about whether the system will finally bite down on corruption that has long been whispered about in bars, taxis, and timelines. Many are itching to even see the former minister join Carter Morupisi who was jailed for corruption as a top civil servant.
