CLIMATE CONSCIOUS BotswanaPost Powers Ahead with Solar-Powered Sedibeng Post Office
In a landmark move this month, BotswanaPost unveiled its newly solar-powered post office at Sedibeng in Phitshane-Molopo, marking a major step towards operational resilience in remote communities. The installation allows the facility to run entirely off-grid, ensuring that mail, financial services, and emergency communications remain uninterrupted even during national power outages.
The Phitshane-Molopo pilot is funded through the Universal Postal Union’s Disaster Recovery Management Fund, which provided a P1.2 million sponsorship for the solar system. As part of this integrated approach, five satellite communication stations have also been deployed across key centres, enhancing BotswanaPost’s capacity to maintain critical services during natural disasters and other emergencies.
BotswanaPost’s Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Officer, Tebogo Lebotse-Sebego, explains that the Solar Project is central to the organisation’s Innovation for Sustainable Growth strategy. She notes that it aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Botswana Vision 2036, and the national Climate Change Policy, reinforcing a commitment to environmental stewardship.
“This initiative is more than clean energy; it is about ensuring uninterrupted service delivery and reinforcing BotswanaPost’s role as a trusted partner in national development,” Lebotse-Sebego said. “With UPU’s support, we are strengthening our infrastructure to be greener, smarter, and more resilient.”
The solar launch complements other ongoing ESG-aligned projects, including the rollout of electric delivery bikes to reduce carbon emissions and the Post4Health initiative, which uses temperature-controlled vehicles to safely transport medicines and vaccines across the country. Together, these programmes underscore BotswanaPost’s broad sustainability agenda.
Member of Parliament for Phitshane-Molopo, Edwin Dikoloti, praised the project as a symbol of inclusive development. “No community is too remote for innovation,” he stated. “Sedibeng Post Office stands today as a model of energy resilience and future-proof service delivery.”
As BotswanaPost continues to pursue climate-conscious growth, digital transformation, and strategic partnerships, its solar-powered post office at Sedibeng exemplifies a vision of a connected, sustainable postal network that leaves no one behind.
