His Excellency Mokgweetsi Masisi speaks at this year’s BNSC Awards


In an unusual turn of events, President Mokgweetsi Masisi attendend the 43rd Annual Botswana Sports Awards ceremony that took place at the Royal Aria Convention Centre in Gaborone on Saturday night.

The event organisers, Botswana National Sports Commission, had earlier expressed delight at the rare feat of having a Head of Stae attend the Awards Ceremony, even posting at their social media platforms that the ceremony was set to be pleasantly different.

Speaking during the ceremony President  Masisi called for more hard work by athletes and their leaders as they aim to add to their current achievements by bring five gold medals from the 2028 Olympic Games.

“As you look to the future, let us not rest on our laurels. Let us set our eyes and sights higher, and aim for greatness with our bold and audacious goal of getting five gold medals by the year of our Lord 2028 at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles,” he said amid the applause from the gathered sportsmen and women, to which he added:

“Just come to think of it – wouldn’t that be a pretty good farewell gift for me as I retire that year? Yaa I think so.”

He  highlighted that the celebration was not only to honour the achievements of sport people but also to reflect on the remarkable strides that Botswana has made in a variety of areas, including sport

President Masisi highlighted that in recent years, Batswana have made remarkable achievements in track and field events that have solidified Botswana’s place in the archives of sports history. He further stated that athletes have not only competed but have excelled, standing proudly on the podium as champions and ambassadors of Botswana. His Excellency, Dr Masisi stated that their dedication, hard work, and determination serve as a shining example of inspiration to many, reminding Batswana that with determination and fortitude, anything is possible.

His Excellency wished Team Botswana the best of luck at the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympic Games and encouraged them to bring home the much anticipated Gold medals. [Additional reporting: BWGovernment]
